Inspired by Cubism and the traditional Ethiopian mesob, this piece alludes to the concept of weaving through multiple mediums. The geometric patterning in the center of the piece is a direct translation of the patterns of a woven mesob, further abstracted into a tapestry of pattern and color through the use of found fabrics. The piece transforms a symbolic yet functional object of Ethiopian culture into a purely aesthetic representation. As Ethiopia moves towards a more urbanized nation, it celebrates a culture of hand-craftsmanship in an increasingly industrial and digital age while challenging the capitalist urge for functionality.
