Entry to 2017 Barbara G Laurie NOMA student design competition

A design proposal for the John S. Chase Academy of Architectural Design and Sustainability sited on the grounds of a former landfill, in the neighborhood of Sunnyside in Houston, Texas. Within a masterplan for a comprehensive campus of land rehabilitiation, several nodes serve as factories of revitalization. Here,
by-products from local industries are converted into recycled goods, and the raw objects are made accessible for material explorations. The symbiosis between the educational institution and the waste infrastructure creates the potential for material reuse within the site as design/build projects engage the students in a hands-on approach to architecture, while at the same time creating spaces for community interaction and advancement. The campus becomes a model of a community and a design education centered around environmental awareness and material sustainability.
